Trochoidal Milling

Postby rddcnc » Thu Jan 19, 2017 3:23 pm

Hello,

Let me begin by saying that I am new to both Meshcam and to CNC in general. I've only just gotten my first Chinese 6040 up and running using Meshcam and Mach4. I did some searches here on the forum, but I didn't see this topic anywhere. Let me know if I missed it.

As with most Newbies, I've been busy scouring YouTube for educational videos. One of the most fascinating has been a channel by Christian Knull. He has a very clear and informative video on the concept of Trochoidal Milling https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORJ-Q3TFW5oThis method appears to have some definite advantages especially for tool life. Also, from looking at other CNC videos on YouTube, it may be the technical name of the toolpath for some forms of HSM (high speed machining) that I've seen, though I'm not sure about this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAHYpbLKnVA

All that said, what I'm wondering is: 1) Does Meshcam has this feature buried somewhere that I've not yet found. And if not, 2) Is it a feature on the horizon for future versions? Computing these tool paths appears to me to be very complex mathematically, but I'm not a CAM software developer, so that may not be true. Just wondering...

Thanks.

HI Robert, and welcome to the forum. Troochoidal milling is really cool, and I would like to have that capability also. The only trochoidal milling I've seen is on 2.5D features (pockets, outlines, etc.) but it also would be useful for roughing on 3D parts, which would then be finished with traditional parallel and waterline passes.

At this point, MeshCAM does not offer trochoidal roughing, and only Robert ("Mr. MeshCAM") would be able to say if it is on his horizon. I'd suggest an email to the MeshCAM support and ask him.

All opinions in this post are mine alone. I am not a MeshCAM employee, I do not have a financial interest in MeshCAM, nor do I speak for MeshCAM. MeshCAM user since Beta 5 in 2003. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15333 :ugeek:

Hi Robert,

please have a look here : https://www.secotools.com/de-DE/Global/ ... l-Milling/

They offer an Excel application creating g-code for trochoidal milling slots you can play with.
